I'm as shocked as you are, but I think it's true. I have been playing some Black Ops multiplayer because of the double XP weekend and discovered the render feature. I knew you could save clips and screenshots much like the theater in Reach and Halo 3. I did not realize you could render clips up to 30 seconds FOR FREE AND HAVE THEM IMMEDIATELY POSTED TO YOUR YOUTUBE ACCOUNT!

Yea, I know!

So, I paid for Bungie Pro when Reach came out. I was given 5 render minutes a month. The way render minutes work is a joke. I wrote up a feature on Bungie Pro for Platform Nation a while back. I signed up because I thought it was the easiest way to get my clips to my YouTube account. And when I complained about it costing, all I heard from Bungie apologists is that it costs money to render the clips because it uses server resources, etc. Apparently it's worth it to Treyarch to eat that cost in order to give buyers of Black Ops this feature at no cost. This totally blows the apologist's argument out of the water.

Why's everybody gotta defend the devs when they make decisions like this that are only designed to pick our pocket? Drives me nuts!

It's hard to believe it's been five years since the launch of the Xbox 360. A lot has happened in my personal life, and my life as a gamer. One of the most significant sites that helped shape my community experience with the Xbox 360 is MyGameCard.net. A lot of sites have come and gone, but MGC.net has remained the constant. In the earliest days of the 360, it allowed us to share our gamercards on sites, forums, and e-mail unlike the basic Microsoft version. I would argue that the whole gamercard phenomenon would not be as popular as it is without MGC. Think of it as getting achievements without being able to share them with your friends.

Unfortunately, MGC has shut down. Morgon, the site creator, had to pull the plug because it's just not financially feasible for him anymore. I totally get that. Anything I do online I do for free if at all possible. If something requires payment, I immediately break into a sweat. I can only imagine what maintaining the site cost on a monthly basis. It's sad because such a valuable resource would be easy for Microsoft to step in and help maintain. Unfortunately, there will probably be no such luck.

This further proves what we've been seeing from Microsoft for some time, which is the steady pulling away from the community aspects of their business and their focus on the milking of the brand. Now, I know what you will say. They're a business. They want to make money. I got that. I also know that the Xbox 360 wouldn't be where it is without the involvement of the community. All of the community developers, podcasters, and supporters of the console helped push it back in 2005. We were podcasting about all things Xbox even before the 360. Not to mention the laundry list of forums and blogs we created in order to bring together this massive group of like minded people.

Microsoft has been pushing away from the community table for quite some time, too. The dissolution of the Gamerscoreblog was the first major sign. Everything else has been a gradual shift. Not posting community playdates on the Xbox dashboard. Trixie360 resigning from her job. She was the last true link we had to how Microsoft used to work. And say what you will, but I find it hard to believe that anyone would leave a job with the Xbox division of Microsoft unless they saw the writing on the wall.

At the end of the day, it's the community that matters most. We are the ones that buy the games, DLC, and avatar gear. Sure, Microsoft could get by with a steady release schedule of movie licensed games, Madden, and Call of Duty, but who's going to be there when the Xbox 720 finally comes out? It's those of us that are dedicated to the platform that will be there on day one.

I plan on leaving our gamercards on the site just as you see them now. There's no good replacement for them and I would rather show my support of MGC than to just change them. I remember how we got here and I thank Morgon for his hard work. Unfortunately, I question whether Microsoft does the same.

Here are the Uncanny Gamers' top 8 favorite games for 2010. In no particular order...

Actually, I think it's safe to assume that our favorite game of last year was Red Dead Redemption. We both had a great time with the game, both in single and multiplayer. Hunting bears is some of the most fun we had.

Halo: Reach also gave us some great co-op time together. Beating the campaign on Legendary is something we've done with all the Halo games (except ODST, but that one doesn't count), so it felt good to blast through it again.

Under The Sea

The other day I had the chance to watch a couple underwater monster movies from back in the day. I watched them back-to-back, which is really the way to go when you think about it. Watching them separate would be like eating the chips one day then the salsa the next. Everybody would be all "where's the chips" and I would be all "I ate them yesterday" and they would be "why the hell didn't you eat the salsa?" and I would be "maybe I didn't want salsa, dammit!".

Anyway, I watched Leviathan first, mainly because I love Peter Weller. With the exception of this and the Robocop movies, he can really pick the shitty movies. (And yes, I'm talking about Buckaroo Banzai. Damn, that's a piece of shit.) It also has Richard Crenna and Hector Elizondo, both of whom I enjoy.

Funny thing about Leviathan is that the monster never gets that big. Not to what I would call Leviathan-sized. Regardless, it's a pretty decent movie for what it is, which is basically Alien underwater. And I'm ok with that. Mainly because of the end scene and Peter Weller yelling, "Say ah, motherfucker!" Totally worth it.

I saved DeepStar Six for second because I wasn't aware of any Peter Weller-caliber actors in it. That is until I started watching it. It's got goddamn Miguel Ferrer! That checks him off on my "People I Like From Robocop" list. Only one I need for the hat trick is Kurtwood Smith.

Anyway, while we're talking about cast, let me blow your mind. It's got fuckin' Lloyd Braun in it! From Sienfeld! I sat there staring at that guy trying to place him for like 10 minutes. I finally IMDB'd him and figured it out. You want to know the best part? The diving suit in the poster there gets bitten in half by the monster. Guess who's in it?! Lloyd Braun! I was ecstatic!

I guess what I'm saying is, 1989 was a good year for underwater alien-monster movies.

Godfinger

Godfinger is silly. It's repetitive. It often feels like more of a job than a game. It's also the best thing I've played on the iPhone so far.

I really don't see the appeal of games like Farmville, Fishville, Frontierville, Yoville, Townville, Crackville, or VilleVille. The managing of all these little things in order to harvest, feed, and eventually level up just feels boring and contrived.

Now, I can't complain anymore. I get it.

Godfinger removes a lot of the crap you have to deal with in Farmville type games and instead charges you with being an actual god over a small planet. You have followers and the power to make them do your bidding. This usually ends up with you forcing them to farm for gold until they are exhausted, at which point you can let them rest at a tent, tavern, or fishing hole. Rinse, repeat.

The thing that makes Godfinger different are its charm and ability to visit other planets. I say charm because the game is long on cute little things that, by themselves, wouldn't matter, but taken as a whole show a nice attention to detail. The noises your followers make when you toss them or while they are resting is adorable. When they are at a tavern drinking you hear them burping and farting.

Hey, Godfinger. You had me at burping.

Visiting your friend's planets allows you to enchant one follower on their planet. Doing this nets you a gold bonus for you and your friend. It's simple, and it gets you out there seeing what other people have done with their little patches of terra firma. Once a certain amount of time has passed, you will get a postcard from your friend with the gold attached. That is unless they've allowed the gold to rust by letting it sit too long.

What Godfinger does exceptionally well is keep the carrot on a stick placed firmly in front of you. At any time I usually have a few different goals to accomplish. Each goal you accomplish gives you a reward. The reward could be more gold, another follower, or an expansion of your planet. And, with a few exceptions, they are goals for things you were probably going to do anyway, so they don't feel forced.

In the long run, I don't know what will happen in the game. I don't know what the level cap is or what happens when you hit it. I'm at level 29 now and still have some buildings to unlock. Until then, I'll keep collecting gold, tossing my followers, and just playing god. Not bad for a free game.

The Assassin's Creed Friends Flashback Episode

Try Not To Fart (XBLIG)

I discovered an independent game this week called Try Not To Fart. Naturally, I had to capture some video of this comedic gem.

The premise of the game revolves around people in public trying not to fart in certain social situations. The first one has you in a club trying to pick up a girl. The second one is you at lunch in a restaurant.

I didn't spend the 80 points to buy the game. I'm not sure what other scenarios you go through since I didn't go past the second one, but if it includes one where you're in mid-coitus and trying not to fart, I might reconsider spending the $1.

Split/Second

One of my favorite games of all time is Burnout Revenge. So much so that when Burnout Paradise released, I spewed nine kinds of hate towards it for changing the formula and jettisoning everything good that was in Revenge. Having since played it on the PS3, my hate has softened like a gallon of ice cream left out at a birthday party. It's still there, but everyone has forgotten about it.

Enter two new contenders to the Burnout Revenge throne. Not that they were being marketed as such, but in my mind both Blur and Split/Second were being developed to fill the void that the Burnout franchise abandoned several years ago. The only recent contenders for the position of "full-on destruction smash racing game" have been Full Auto and possibly Motorstorm, and as you know neither fit the bill or fill the shoes of Burnout.

I played the Blur beta and enjoyed it quite a bit. Since I don't have a Wii anymore I can't play Mario Kart, so Blur scratched that competitive itch and did it with gorgeous graphics and real cars. The Split/Second demo was also good fun, so it was pretty much a toss-up as to which one would be spinning in my console sometime soon.

Best Buy recently had a sale on Split/Second, dropping the price to $40. Decision made!

So this brings me to the reason for this writing. Split/Second IS the new Burnout. I'm only 3 episodes in to the campaign and I'm loving the racing, destruction, and explosions. Blur might give you different weapons to use on your opponents, but Split/Second makes the entire track your weapon. It's amazing.

The only thing I wish it has is the Twitter integration that Blur has. It is cool that the achievements you unlock show up as decals on your car. This is an awesome idea and something that should be implemented in other games (Reach, I'm looking at you).

Bottom line is, if you've been wanting a good racing game, the wait is over. It's been quite a dry spell, but Split/Second is like a shot of Gatorade to the face. Gatorade and gasoline.

In our latest episode, we pitched another movie idea that we have "in development" here at Uncanny HQ. Here it is written out for your reading enjoyment. How good would this movie be?!

Bucket List 2: Bucket Harder!

In this movie Ryan Reynolds plays a guy that made a bucket list when he was only 8 years old. Since then he has slowly been checking off items on the list. As he nears his 35th birthday, a scant 5 items remain. After a visit to a psychic, he realizes that, if he never completes the list, he will never be able to die. It becomes a race to escape fate as he dodges the final items on the list, which keep being presented to him by a power greater than himself.

His own mortality!

In the end we see him as an old man. 1 item remains on his list. In the final moments of the film, we see him undertake the final task. It involves him rocketing into space in the hopes of becoming a space cowboy ninja unicorn.

The Red Dead Episode

This Memorial Day weekend we're doing on thing and one thing only. Skinning birds, horses and whores in Red Dead Redemption! Our official word is this game is awesome! I Just Unfollowed My Own Murderer

In this movie, Angelina Jolie plays a woman that gets called for jury duty. The man on trial has pleaded guilty, so all that remains is the sentencing. The jury deliberates, all the while getting to know each other and exchanging their Facebook and Twitter information. The sentence they hand down is twenty years without the possibility of parole.

A few years pass. Jolie keeps in contact with a few of the members, and also remains friends with the rest through social networking online. One day she gets a Facebook message from one of her fellow jury members with a link to a news story. The man they sentenced to prison has escaped!

At first she doesn't think much of it. The police will catch him, she thinks. During this time she gains a few followers on Twitter as well as a few new friends on Facebook. This is nothing new. What she doesn't know is one of her new followers is the man she helped send to jail. Then, on the 3rd day after learning of his escape, she gets a message from the husband of the juror that sent her the story. She's dead. A car accident. Was this pure coincidence or something sinister?

Angelina meets with her few juror friends she has kept in close contact with. They have lunch and discuss the possibility of the man tracking down and killing them one by one. During that lunch, they all receive text messages with the same link. It takes them to a newspaper article about the man they put in prison. It includes information they were not aware of at the time of the trial, like how his IQ is genius level and how he is also mentally unstable. They leave their lunch scared for their lives.

As the movie moves on, we see the man planning his kills with startling efficiency, all thanks to the information he's able to gather from Facebook and Twitter. By following and friending the jurors, he takes them out one at a time. Our group of internet savvy juror friends see updates come through their feeds about the deaths, and come to realize that their lives are in grave danger. This continues until only the 3 of them remain.

A trip to the police station ends in them staying at Jolie's house (she has a big 4 bedroom monster of a house even though she's single and doesn't seem to have a job) with a police car sitting outside guarding them. As the night wears on and they monitor their profiles, they get sleepy and end up passing out in the living room, laptops open and cell phones off the chargers.

They are startled awake by their phones receiving messages from Facebook. They each open the message to see the same picture. The outside of Jolie's house! One of them attempts to call the policeman in the car outside (he was hitting on her while he gave her his number), another message comes in, this time via Twitter and Twitpic. It's of the officer she's trying to call. He's been shot in the head!

Screams ensue.

The group runs up stairs and barricades themselves in Angelina's huge master bedroom. They grab makeshift weapons like a candelabra and letter opener. Tense moments pass. They only have Angelina's phone with them and the battery is almost dead. As they refresh Facebook and Twitter, one more picture pops up. It's of her bedroom door. Then the battery dies, leaving them to tremble in fear.

He busts down the door and attacks them. He's able to wound the two friends, leaving Jolie alone to fight for her life. The fight ends with him flying out the second story window and landing on a lawn jockey. Jolie looks out the window at the grizzly scene and says "Consider yourself unfollowed, bitch."

Fin.

12 Steps To Overcome L4D Addiction

According to the Center for On-Line Addiction, warning signs for L4D addiction include:

*Playing for increasing amounts of time (without sex)
*Thinking about gaming during other activities (including sex)
*Gaming to escape from real-life problems, anxiety, depression, (and sex)
*Lying to friends and family to conceal gaming (during sex)
*Feeling irritable when trying to cut down on gaming (and sex)

Physical signs of L4D addiction include:

*Carpal tunnel syndrome (from masturbating)
*Sleep disturbances (not sex)
*Back, neck aches
*Headaches (due to lack of sex)
*Dry eyes
*Failure to eat regularly or neglect personal hygiene

This 12 step program will help you overcome your L4D addiction and set you on the path to new and different games.

1. HONESTY: Admit that you, or your character (unless it's Coach), are powerless to overcome your addictions and that your life has become unmanageable as a result of Valve software.

2. HOPE: Come to believe that the power greater than ourselves or a bottle of pills can restore you to health. Zoe is not coming to revive you, either.

3. TRUST: Decide to turn your will and your life over to the care of your higher power and succumb to the witch for one last time.

4. TRUTH: Make a searching and fearless written moral inventory of yourself and your game library. How many remain unopened? How many remain neglected?

5. INTEGRITY: Admit to yourself, to a higher power, and another human being the exact nature of your wrongs. This can be via Facebook or Twitter.

6. CHANGE OF HEART: Become entirely ready to have a higher power remove all your characters and game saves. Deletion is the only answer.

7. HUMILITY: Humbly ask a higher power to remove your disc from your console.

8. BROTHERLY LOVE: Make a written list of all gamertags you have harmed with friendly fire and become willing to make restitution to them.

9. RESTITUTION AND RECONCILIATION: Wherever possible, make direct restitution to all gamers you have harmed via Microsoft Points, except when to do so would injure them or others addicted to the game.

10. ACCOUNTABILITY: Continue to take personal inventory of the DLC you've bought and never played, and when you are wrong promptly play it.

11. PERSEVERANCE: Ignore (and continue to ignore) your L4D friends list. Earnestly seek to understand your higher power, no matter who may be on Xbox Live any given day. Continue to give yourself credit for earnest effort, however imperfect or weepy.

12. SERVICE AND SPIRITUALITY: Having had a spiritual video game awakening as a result of these steps, share this message with others who excessively play L4D as a replacement for human touch and practice these principles in all you do.

Unsung Heroes - The Boob Modeler

The other day I was thinking about the guy that gets to model the boobs in major video game releases. You know, the guy that works with Tomonobu Itagaki for months on end trying to get the jiggle in Kasumi's blouse just right. The guy that spends 60 hours a week on one boob in Soul Calibur. I was thinking, is this guy happy?

You can imagine that getting that job is either a gift or a curse. I can see the guys around the office drawing straws to determine who gets to work on titty physics for the next three years. I just wonder if it's a good thing or a bad thing. I suppose that what you're rooting for (short or long straw) entirely depends on your love of the boob. Of course, it's possible to be a boob lover, but not want that job at all.

I'm talking about the gynecologist problem. Why else do guys go into gynecology except to see lady bits all day? It's got to be a pretty exciting time, getting into medical school, graduating, and then opening up a practice. Then, after a week and 30 or so very hairy appointments, the realization has to set in that this is what you're going to be doing for a very long time.

This has to be what the boob guy goes through. The first couple months are great. Researching nipples on the internet. Buying Juggs magazine and being able to write it off. Watching Baywatch. Then, just like when you say a word over and over, the boob loses it's meaning. It's just another pixelated blob.

I feel for this guy. If there's an unsung hero in the gaming industry, it's him. He presses his face between those cold, computerized mammaries and motorboats the hell out of them, just so we can enjoy Dead or Alive Paradise the way it was meant to be enjoyed.

More Gamer Stand Up

Is it just me, or are people getting stupider? No where is this more apparent than jumping into a match of Halo 3. It never fails when I jump into a social match, people call me out for one reason or another. And they always say my name wrong. As if I've somehow spelled it in some strange way. As far as I know, the word Gemini has been around for a few years. I didn't' make it up. But somehow, I'm always referred to as Gee-mini. Like I'm mini. I actually had a kid who couldn't have been more than 12 tell some other guy who was probably in his twenties how to say it...INCORRECTLY!

"Look, it says Gee-mini." "Oh", the guys says. He actually had said it right and was shot down by the kid.

Amazing!

Then, once we were in the map, both of them called me a fag for not helping them and not killing the guys killing them.

What amazes me is the fact that people resort to all sorts of misspellings in order to have a unique gamertag. They use 1337 speak, they insert little x's between each letter of their name. And somehow, when we're in a game, everyone gets called by the right name. "Hey, P33intheshower, pick me and xTHExMADxMANx up in the Warthog!" Meanwhile, I get "hey, gee-mini ass!" I mean, I appreciate people saying I have a mini ass, but still.
